On January 29,1979, at 2125 hours (9:25 p.m.), Beverly Harron discovered a body directly east of the Piggly Wiggly Store at Wyoming and Montgomery, next to some trash bins.  she contacted employees at the Thrifty Drug Store who contacted the police.  Officers responded to the scene as well as Criminalistics and Violent Crimes detectives and identification of the body was made as Gene May.  It appeared that the body had been drug a few feet by the collar due to the condition of the victim's clothing.  The victim's face was very bloody, and the body was still relatively warm.  A red Mercedes Benz sports car was parked northeast of the body, with the left rear tire punctured and flat.  The victim had been shot in the head.
